Three Minds - DBT
🧠 In Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), we explore three distinct states of mind: Logical Mind, Emotional Mind, and Wise Mind.
Each of these modes has its own value:
Our Logical Mind is grounded in reason, facts, and analysis. It helps us plan, problem-solve and approach situations methodically. But when we stay here too long, we may overlook emotional nuance or struggle to connect meaningfully with others.
Our Emotional Mind is led by our feelings — it’s intuitive, passionate and responsive. It fuels creativity, empathy and motivation. But if we become stuck in this state, it can be hard to think clearly or regulate our reactions to situations.
Our Wise Mind is the integration of both, allowing us to make choices that are both thoughtful and aligned with our values. Our Wise Mind doesn’t look the same for everyone. It’s shaped by your experiences, insights and intentions. In therapy, we work to recognise when we’ve veered too far into one mind and build the capacity to return to Wise Mind as a grounded, authentic response. Holding space for all three types of mind helps us to use them when they are helpful to us and to avoid being stuck.
